Young Satellite Meteorologist Competition
Europe’s latest weather satellite will be launched in 2005 and you and your friends can win a trip to join in the launch celebrations live at mission headquarters in Germany. For this and a host of other prizes, enter the EUMETSAT Young Satellite Meteorologist Competition, open to students aged 15-16 in schools across Europe.

The competition is being held to celebrate Europe’s success in the area of satellite meteorology and to mark the launch of Meteosat-9, EUMETSAT’s latest weather satellite.
The Meteosat-9 satellite is planned for launch in the first half of 2005 from the Kourou Space Centre in French Guiana and will be carried into orbit aboard an Ariane 5 launcher.

Winners of the competition will be invited to attend the live launch event, as guests of EUMETSAT, at its headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. Schools and teachers may enter any number of teams, but each team can only submit one entry, and each student may only participate once.

Who can enter?
The competition is open to students aged 15 – 16, who may enter in teams of 2, 3 or 4 participants. Each entry must be submitted on behalf of the team by a teacher in their school.

The questions are the same for each country.
The deadline for entries is 18.00hrs GMT on Thursday 31 March 2005.

Results will be announced on Friday 8 April 2005. Winners will be invited to attend the launch event at EUMETSAT’s Headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany.

About the Questions
The questions are multiple choice and will require students to carry out internet research using specific referred websites in order to find the answers. The quiz is divided into two sections with a tie-breaker:

The first part of the quiz will focus on satellite meteorology in general, the second part concentrates on image interpretation.
