International science fiction writing contest the school year 2003-2004
Are you between 16 and 19 years old, interested in the outer space and enjoy to write stories? Submit your story- and may be you are the one of two winners who will participate at European Space Camp at Andøya in North Norway summer 2004.

EURISY and UNESCO in cooperation with the Norwegian Centre for Space-related Education (NAROM) are encouraging young minds to explore outer space in a peaceful manner and to imagine settings that could lead to further scientific advancement or social progress.

THEME:
"OUTER SPACE"

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Students aged 16-19 years old. Girls are highly encouraged to participate.

CONTENT
Students are invited to write short stories that underline the peaceful exploration of outer space. The story could relate a voyage to or living in another planet(s), an encounter with another being(s) or entity(ies), a construction in outer space, a scientific discovery, etc. All ideas are welcome – there is no limit so let your imagination work!
 
CONTEST RULES
LANGUAGE
The story can be written in English, French or in any European language which can be translated by a Focal Point (see SUBMISSION OF SHORT STORIES below). The final selection will be based on stories submitted in English or in French.

PRESENTATION
The story must be typed single space on an A4 size paper (8.5x11.5 inch or 21.cmsx29.7cms) with 1-inch margin on all sides. Recommended fonts are Arial, Helvetic and Times New Roman (12-point).

The story must not exceed 6 pages. Each story must be accompanied by an official entry form (see the link Entry Form science fiction).
 
SUBMISSION OF SHORT STORIES
Only first-time entries must be submitted. Stories that have won in other contests will not be considered valid.

Stories written in English or French must be sent directly to EURISY by post or by e-mail to the following address:

The Focal Points will pre-select the stories received and submit to EURISY the two best stories, duly translated into English or French.

Deadline for submission of stories to Focal Points: 20 April 2004

JUDGING CRITERIA
The stories will be judged according to the grasp of the theme, originality and creativeness. An international jury will meet in Paris in May 2004 to select two winners: one male and one female.
 
PRIZES
A week at the European Space Camp at Andøya Rocket Range in North of Norway summer 2004, starting 28th July.
 
ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNERS
The winners will be informed directly by EURISY and UNESCO in May 2004. Their names will be posted on EURISY’s and UNESCO’s websites.
The winners will be asked to prepare their travel documents as soon as they are informed of the news.
 
COPYRIGHT
All submitted science fiction short stories will be the property of the organizers of the contest (EURISY, NAROM and UNESCO). These short stories will be used freely in publications or promotional materials.
